Perspectives.

Consider a cup of Hot Chocolate from Starbucks, or a similar drink from Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, or the equivalent from The Coffee Connoisseur. I don't know about you, but when i drank it, the hot chocolate tastes exactly like Milo; and I felt cheated.

I'm not exactly trying to argue that Starbucks, or any other cafe serve poor quality drinks, but using this experience to prove that perspectives of a person can change the attitude for the better, or for the worse. And neither am I here to judge, or invite any comments whether Hot Chocolate really does taste like Milo.

In the above-mentioned example, the Hot Chocolate that costs over 6 bucks tastes similar to one which sells at any coffeeshop for about a sixth of it's price; and costs less than a tenth to make a similar drink at home. Which is precisely why I felt cheated.

But when we go through the example again, the experience has two rather similar conclusions. One, that Hot Chocolate tastes like Milo; two, that Milo tastes like Hot Chocolate. The two are logically similar, but when we look at it again, we will see the difference.

The common reaction to the first conclusion is that "I feel cheated"; and the second is "Wow, I didn't know that this drink actually tastes like that high-class one". But what exactly distincts between the two? It's perspective. The first conclusion lowers the standard of the first drink in comparison, while the second example increases the value of what we otherwise consider as a standard and relatively cheap drink. Therefore, perspective is very important to one's emotional state, and thus consequently to one's satisfaction with the product. So next time when you drink coffee, would you ask "Why does the Coffee Bean Classic taste like Nescafe" or "I didn't know Nescafe tastes so much like my favourite Coffee Bean Classic".

Either way, you'll probably never ever buy Hot Chocolate or Coffee Bean Classic; but you'll feel better when you next drink a cup of $1 milo from the coffeeshop or when you smell the aroma from the cup made from that packet of instant coffee in your drawer.
