CNA: 23,966 marriages were registered last year, up by 1.1 per cent or 260 from 2006. However, this was still lower than the annual average of 24,800 registered in the 1990s. 7,226 marriages were dissolved last year, up by 165 from 2006, and the largest divorce rate came from couples aged between 20 and 24.
i was shocked when i read that the largest divorce rate came from couples aged between 20 and 24.. but after a while, it shouldn't have came as that big a surprise.. after all, they probably are either freshly grads or people who do not yet have a job that comes with quality steady income.. they shouldn't have been married in the first place!! but what to do, legal age to marry is 18.. so counting back, those who divorced at 20 spent less than 2 years married together.. what, have they merely known each other for 2 days before registering at ROM??
back in secondary school i always thought that singapore had a safe divorce rate.. but now, we're looking at about 30%.. it's really very hard to believe that 3 out of every 10 marriages end up in a divorce.. and that makes me wonder what are the BGR breakup rates, if marriage is supposed to be a wise and informed decision after continued investigation into both parties (to put it matter-of-fact-ly)..
